Michael Silver, MD
Michael Silver, M.D. has been in the clinical practice of psychiatry and psychotherapy in the Philadelphia area for over thirty years. A graduate of Harvard College and Johns Hopkins University Medical School, he did his postgraduate medical training in pediatrics and psychiatry at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic. He is board-certified in adult and child psychiatry, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Silver was the Medical Director of the Inpatient Program at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Center for over fifteen years, where he also served as the Director of the Child Psychiatry training program and the Medical Director of the psychiatry consultation service at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Children's Seashore House. He subsequently was the Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services at Friends Hospital. He has been a member of the medical school faculties at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and Drexel University, and has won several awards for Excellence in Teaching of Child Psychiatry.
Dr. Silver has been an invited lecturer and workshop presenter at local, national, and international conferences on over fifty occasions, including meetings of the American Psychiatry Association, the American Orthopsychiatric Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and the Psychotherapy Networker Symposium, and has made Grand Rounds presentations at various local and national medical centers. He has published numerous book chapters and articles in professional journals, and co-authored Madness, Chaos, and Violence: Therapy with Families at the Brink, a book describing the treatment of the most severe and difficult clinical problems.
In his practice, Dr. Silver provides consultations and ongoing therapy for the full range of clinical situations with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. He has extensive experience in the treatment of psychosomatic and eating disorders, depression and suicidal behavior, anxiety, psychosis, abuse, and addictions, among other problems, and also provides consultation and ongoing clinical supervision for mental health professionals of all disciplines.
